City Sound Walks: Manchester Science Festival

Electricity was the Manchester Science Festival theme for 2018, we were commissioned by the festival to create portable light responsive noise machines for a series of night time sound walks around Manchester that played the light of the city. To create the machines we partnered with Brighter Sound and ran a six week electronics course at our studio for young people aged 18-25. The participants learned how to prototype and solder electronic circuits, improvise with light and designed our urban sound walk routes with us. The routes took the public around industrial Manchester including Castlefield, the canals and Deansgate locks; playing the light and architecture of the streets, finding rhythms and tones through passing traffic, lighting design and shops and bars.
